Defensive vs. Offensive Data Strategy
Defensive and offensive data strategies are not mutually exclusive. Finding the right balance between risk mitigation and value creation, between control and flexibility, is crucial in developing an effective data strategy. Defensive data strategies focus on cost reduction, efficacy, compliance, mitigation of downside risks, data quality, and integrity, as well as on endorsing a single source of truth (SST).
In contrast, an offensive data strategy prioritizes growth and value creation, data culture, democratizing the use of data throughout the organization, as well as the monetization of data through data products/data-enabled products. "Multiple versions of truth" may be acceptable with regard to an agile and flexible use of data.
